Lone Wolf Just gets up in a thrilling finish

Derek O’Connor was seen at his strongest when getting Lone Wolf up close home in the GVA Donal O’Buachalla Property Advisors Flat Race at Punchestown.

All For Joy looked set to end a frustrating sequence of placed efforts when drawing clear early in the straight but he was worn down by the Joseph O’Brien-trained winner in the final strides.

The JP McManus-owned 6/1 chance prevailed by a head, with Fontley House a length and a half back in third.

There was a sting in the tail for O’Connor who picked up a three-day suspension for his use of the whip, while Anthony Fox was given a two-day ban on the runner-up.

O’Brien said, “Derek gave him a great ride. He’d a good run in a novice hurdle the last day. We fancied him in Leopardstown at Christmas and he disappointed us on the day so we gave him a little break and then we said we’d train him for here.

“He’s a nice horse to be going novice hurdling next year. He’ll have a nice summer break now.”

Camile lands a big gamble

Camile is ridden out by Wayne Lordan

 By Donal Murphy
Camile landed a major gamble in the Racing Again May 19th Handicap, scoring on just her second start for current connections.

Available at 25/1 in a place this morning, the daughter of Captain Rio opened on-course at just 15/2, before going off the 7/2 favourite under Wayne Lordan.

Settled in mid-division on the outer, she was pushed along and ridden from the three furlong pole. It wasn't until just over a furlong out that she really got going, getting to the front inside the final 150 yards, before going on to score by two and a half lengths.

Templemary Boy (9/1) finished second under Shane Foley for Paul Flynn, while the well-backed Feeling Easy (25s this morning and from 12s to 17/2 on-course) was a short head back in third with Denis Linehan aboard for Tony Mulholland.

Bella Rua completed the placings another half a length back in fourth, with Leigh Roche aboard this 16/1 chance.

"She was working fairly okay and had come down a good bit in the weights. On her old form she was entitled to do that," said O'Brien.

"Wayne gave her fantastic ride as she never looked like she was going to win anywhere."

Song Of The Sky gives Joseph his 200th winner

After losing out narrowly in the previous event with Remmy D, Joseph and Donnacha O'Brien went a place better in the concluding Book Online At www.limerickraces.ie For Twilight Racing Handicap through 11/4 favourite Song Of The Sky.

Six days on from a Cork win, the Rip Van Winkle mare made it two from three since joining the O'Brien yard here.

Shane Crosse rode last Sunday, but on this occasion under Donnacha the chestnut found plenty when asked to get the better of Northern Sky by two lengths.

"It was grand because we bought her for only 2,500gns last November and now she's after winning a couple and is a nice filly and is after improving since the last day," said Joseph O'Brien, reportedly sending out his 200th winner.

"I don't know how much more she can progress but she has won two races for us and she'll jump a hurdle eventually. She's not the simplest ride in the world and both Donnacha and Shane (Crosse) the last day gave her good rides to win."

Drapers Guild Wins at the 7th attempt

Aidan O’Brien saddled three of the five runners in the Crowne Plaza Race & Stay Maiden at Dundalk but it was his son Joseph who had the final word with Drapers Guild.

The son of Dutch Art was by far the most experienced of the quintet opening his account here at the seventh attempt.

The 5/1 chance led under two furlongs out, and stayed on really well under pressure inside the final furlong for the successful trainer’s younger brother Donnacha.

The winning margin was three lengths over Treble Cone, with 5/6 favourite El Greco another length back in third.

Liscannor Bay made a promising debut staying on nicely in the closing stages to finish close-up in fourth.

Donnacha O'Brien said, “He was the one that had the rating in the race. Everything else had to prove they were up to him and they weren't. The small field suits him as it gives him confidence when he sees he's able to pick up everything around him and he's done it nicely in the end.

“I can't imagine the handicapper can do much after that. Hopefully he can win a few handicaps now.”

Hot on the heels of his first winner at Naas on Friday, Shane Crosse quickly followed up aboard Song Of The Sky in the Buy Online At Corkracecourse.ie Apprentice Handicap.

Having her second outing for Joseph O'Brien, this daughter of Rip Van Winkle showed deep reserves of stamina, finishing off best to collar Lace Bonnet by two and three parts of a length.

"Shane (Crosse) gave her a peach of a ride and is a good lad," said O'Brien.

"He rode a lot of pony winners and is based with me a year, and that's his first winner for me (he won on G Force at Naas on Friday)."

Rockfish breaks his Maiden

 By Gary Carson

Rockfish got up late on to give Joseph O'Brien a quick double at Dundalk this evening, making it two winners from two runners for the trainer on the card.

The 12/1 shot was held up by Wayne Lordanin the ten furlong contest and was driven to challenge Chaparral Dream inside the final furlong.

The Fast Company gelding just got the better of that rival in the last few strides to record a head success and complete a 194/1 brace for the trainer.

The winner was stepping up in trip, and wearing blinkers for the first time, on his seasonal debut having been well held in four starts last season.

Lordan said:- “He’d blinkers for the first time, and it was his first time on the track and he enjoyed it.

“He’s probably strengthened up a bit from two to three, and he got the job done.”

Ming Merciless on debut

 By Gary Carson
Ming made a successful debut for Joseph O'Brien when running out a cosy winner of the ten furlong maiden at Dundalk.

The Pour Moi gelding was easy to back on his first outing, going to post a 14/1 shot having traded at 6/1 in the morning.

Donnacha O'Brien tracked the front-running Sandaryann who opened up a healthy lead after a couple of furlongs.

The 6/4 favourite came back to the field before the straight andMing went on at the two pole.

The winner wandered a bit under pressure inside the final furlong but had plenty up his sleeve as he recorded a three-and-a-quarter length victory over Written Word.

Donnacha O’Brien said:- “He’s not a horse I know a whole lot about and it’s the first time I’ve sat on him.

“Joseph thought he’d run well but he’s obviously been hiding plenty at home and picked up at the track. He won very nicely and he’ll stay a mile and a half as he’s relaxed.

“I had to do a lot of the donkey work as the leader went off quick and I had to get to him. I’d rather have had a little more cover, so it was a good performance.”

 By Michael Graham

Uisce Beatha led home a one-two for Joseph O'Brien in the opening race of the Easter Festival at Fairyhouse.

Even-money-favourite Savannah Storm travelled well and was on terms two out, however, after jumping that flight he weakened out of contention when push came to shove. Uisce Beatha was never far from the pace and moved to the front before the final flight. Once he cleared that obstacle, he galloped on well under JJ Slevin to land this two mile maiden hurdle by four and a quarter lengths at 4/1.

His stablemate Whatchamacallit made a promising debut as he got up for second on the run-in at 7/1. Front-running Reine Fee came home third at 66/1.

Joseph O’Brien said: “He’s a well-bred horse and it’s nice to get him off the mark. I’d say this was an ordinary enough race though.

“He’s a novice now up until the Royal Bond so he could keep on the go during the summer. I’m not sure — we’ll have to see. He’s a lovely big horse though and one for a couple of years’ time.

“The second horse is nice too. He’s a Presenting and a little bit less mature than the winner. He’ll be a smashing horse in a couple of years’ time as well and could possibly come back for a bumper.”

The first two home sported the JP McManus colours.

This was Uisce Beatha's second run after finishing runner-up in a Thurles bumper in November.
